12 Things You Learn Rewatching Die Another Day

5. John Cleese Is A Great Replacement For Desmond Llewelyn

Die Another Day John Cleese

John Cleese was first introduced in the previous film, The World is Not Enough, as Q's (Desmond Llewelyn) assistant, credited under the tongue-in-cheek moniker "R".

Following Llewelyn's tragic death shortly after the release of TWINE, Cleese effectively became his replacement, adopting the Q name and basically playing the same character.

Though Llewelyn's iconic stature in the role is indelible, Cleese did a great job here living up to his legacy, bringing some newer, younger(ish) energy to the part and enjoying some fun patter with 007.

It's a shame Cleese only ever played Q proper for one movie, but he did fine work regardless, both paying homage to Llewelyn's performance and adding a sprinkling of his own charm.
