A decade on from the release of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight, the film continues to influence blockbuster cinema, and perhaps no movie has as successfully emulated the movie's formula as Skyfall.

Sam Mendes opted to shoot the action sequences in a very formal, grounded, gritty style compared to many prior Bond films, with Skyfall's much-praised Shanghai sequence in particular evoking a similar vibe to the Hong Kong mission in The Dark Knight.

Both films employ CGI minimally and focus on visceral stunt-work, while narratively, Skyfall's Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) has the eccentricity and convoluted plan to match The Joker (Heath Ledger), right down to intentionally getting himself caught.

To his credit, Mendes fully admits the influence and wasn't trying to sneak it past viewers. And it was a strategy that sure as hell paid off, because both movies have aged spectacularly well. For the most part, anyway...
