Who Actually Wo?Adrien Brody for The Pianist For the record, Daniel Day-Lewis was only cheated out of this one because Gangs of New York happened to be released the same year as The Pianist. Were it not for Adrien Brody's frankly amazing performance in that, Danny would have calmly walked away with the award. The creative difference between The Pianist and Gangs Of New York is that The Pianist is a sublime film, with a fantastic central performance, whereas Scorsese's weakest effort of recent years was a sub-standard production with poor casting (Cameron Diaz? What are you doing?) and a plot that feels more like a history lesson than a movie... with a fantastic central performance. Daniel Day-Lewis is the sole reason for it being a watchable movie, and deserves an Oscar for the role. Just not when he's up against Adrien Brody for The Pianist. I mean, come on.
