8. That Time He Knew About Moria But Went In Anyway
There is no way that Gandalf couldn't have known about the terrible fate that befell Moria. Technically, it would seem Gimli should have known as well; but we'll forgive him for not knowing because he's a blundering fool for 90 per cent of Jackson's trilogy. It's expressed quite clearly that the underground battle in the tombs took place A LONG TIME AGO - did you see that dusty state of all those dwarf corpses? Gandalf is quite obviously afraid of Moria; and in the film, Saruman's line says it all: "Moria... You fear to go into those mines. The dwarves delved too greedily and too deep. You know what they awoke in the darkness of Khazad-dum. Shadow and flame." This would seem to indicate that Gandalf not only knows of Balin's defeat, but also that the defeat was not down to orcs or goblins. Now, Gandalf clearly isn't the most sociable of tall people, but come on, he should have opted for the mountains. He definitely should have not gone exploring and continued on a four day quest through to the other side of the mines. You've brought your own fate upon yourself.
I love Stephen King and music festivals; I eat my toast upside down; I daydream about getting married probably a bit too much; and I wish every day for a pet sausage dog puppy (who never materialises – sob).
