12 Times Gandalf Seriously Dropped The Ball

7. That Time He Forgot He Had Magic Light Power

In the Return of The King, Gandalf decides that the last third of the final film is a good time to whip out these amazing powers he has, whereby he shoots blinding light out of his magic staff and scares off a whole bunch of flying Nazguls. Obviously these new powers are great, and help the fight at hand no end just when things are beginning to look their most desperate. But when exactly did he acquire these marvellous powers? And why haven't we seen them before - for example, in The Battle of the Five Armies when that light might have been useful in waylaying the dragon Smaug? And come to think of it, why didn't he use them again in the final hectic battle? Couldn't he just blind the orcs with those light powers and win the battle for everyone?
