12 Underrated Found-Footage Horror Movies
8. The Sacrament (2013)
Cults are terrifying organisations that prey on their followers, so the idea of infiltrating one is brave, if a little naive. That's where this tense movie makes its mark.
The Sacrament follows a group of VICE journalists who document their attempts to find the missing sister of one of their co-workers. Their search brings them to a religious commune known as Eden Parish, but they soon learn that this community is not the utopia it's promised to be.
The Sacrament is an ambitious attempt to explore the real-world tragedy of the Jonestown Massacre. While there are no direct allusions to that awful event, you can sense the genuine historical influences in the tense atmosphere, the charismatic performance from Gene Jones as the cult's leader and the devout followers of Eden Parish.
Additionally, while it seems like such a minute detail, the VICE branding adds that extra layer of authenticity, as it's a famous brand many people associate with documentaries of this type. There must have been at least a few people who were tricked by that and wondered what kind of messy documentary they'd stumbled across.
