12 Underrated Superhero Movies That Deserve A Second Viewing

9. Punisher: War Zone

Notable for being the only superhero film to date directed by a woman, Punisher: War Zone is a sequel that has more in common with Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance than it does The Dark Knight. Although the original movie is probably more widely accepted as the "good" one in the franchise, with fans still clamouring for a return to the Thomas Jane incarnation of the gun-swinging anti-hero, War Zone was definitely judged too harshly on its first release.

With a more irredeemable version of the superhero this time around, 2008's Punisher is a much more hardcore affair than most superhero flicks. Not one to shy away from buckets of blood and guts, Lexi Alexander's film takes influences from brutal '80s cop films more than it does regular tentpole blockbusters.

Although he wasn't quite Thomas Jane, new Punisher Ray Stevenson still puts in an admirable performance as the titular anti-hero, creating his own nuanced portrayal in the process. He keeps the movie centred in every scene he's in, bringing a suitable darkness and weight to what could have quickly devolved into a role any stuntman could have stood in for.
