12 Unexpected Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Are Happening
3. Nine To Five 2
Why It's Unexpected
This classic comedy starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton as three working women who turn the tables on their sexist pig of a boss was certainly ripe for a sequel...35 years ago.
The 1980 box office smash had all the potential for an easy cash-in sequel, and yet, while an effort was made to develop a follow-up in the 80s, neither Jane Fonda nor director Colin Higgins were said to be enthusiastic.
That a sequel is now ramping up 40 years after the fact, with Fonda, Tomlin and Parton deep into their respective twilight years, is just mind-boggling.
What We Know
The three leads talked up the idea of a sequel throughout the 2000s, but last year Parton confirmed that a sequel was formally in the works that intended to give the premise a contemporary update.
Last summer, Fonda stated that the sequel would see the three women serving as mentors to a group of younger characters, while Rashida Jones and Pat Resnick were locked in to write the script.
Parton said of the plot, "after all these years, they finally came up with something that makes sense", and though no director or release date is yet scheduled, one expects production to begin sharpish given the ages of the principal players.
