12 Upcoming Movies That Could Change Things Forever

8. Ant-Man Is The First Failure In The Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has suffered through a few suspect films to date (both Iron Man sequels and Thor 2 were pretty far from great), though none of them can be dismissed as total failures, especially considering that each has enjoyed strong commercial success. However, just as Marvel comes off the improbable glory of their quirky space opera Guardians of the Galaxy, they face their next challenge in attempting to bring Ant-Man to the screen. Even ignoring the unfortunate departure of writer-director Edgar Wright from the project, adapting a comic about a guy who can shrink himself and command an army of insects isn't the easiest sell: it could simply be that casual audiences (who account for most of the MCU's box office dollars) won't care about the character as much as devoted comic book fans, leading to a dispiriting $250-300 million box office, making it the series' first undeniable failed venture. Though it hopefully won't happen, if Ant-Man can't find a way to lure in audiences, it'll make a clear message to Marvel that people who enjoy their product simply won't lap up everything they make, good or bad, and that a certain centralised quality control goes a long way.
