12 Upcoming Movies That Have Ignored Massive Mistakes
11. Awkwardly Reinventing The Villain As An "Anti-Hero" - Venom
The Lesson: Texas Chainsaw 3D
The marketing for Venom features the exceptionally lame tagline, "Embrace your anti-hero", which seems to indicate that the movie will awkwardly attempt to reinvent the classic Spider-Man villain as an edgy hero.
Now, that's not to ignore the fact that Venom has been depicted as something of an anti-hero in the comics, but considering the character's famously vicious nature, it's an incredibly fine line to walk tonally, especially in a movie adaptation.
The Tom Hardy-starring film looks like it's going to tip the balance too far in the direction of heroism, presumably because Fox fears that the popcorn-munching crowds won't turn up for a movie that fully commits to the character's savage villainy.
2013's Texas Chainsaw 3D is an unexpected point of comparison, if only because it also took an iconic antagonist and forced a more morally ambiguous interpretation of the character that didn't really fit.
There's definitely a way to make this movie work, but the marketing for Venom doesn't instil much faith at all, sadly.
