Avatar came along at the perfect time to become the highest grossing movie ever. There was still excitement about 3-D technology, the CGI motion capture was state of the art and it featured the return of geek royalty James Cameron. This buzz of excitement got bums in seats and the shiny presentation glossed over the empty characters and well-worn story. In the years since it doesnt appear that Avatar or the world of Pandora has really stuck around in pop culture. The movie doesnt hold up well on rewatch, people arent dressing up as the Navi for Halloween or getting tattoos of Sam Worthington. When Cameron announced his intention to make Avatar 2, 3 and 4 the news with met with a resounding meh. Thats became nobody is excited to return to that world or those characters. It was all surface confection with no emotional attachment, so spending another three movies there isnt very appealing. Sigourney Weaver will be returning from the dead for her role as Dr. Scientist, except this time shell be a tree spirit or something. Theres also a rumour one of the movies will be exploring the sea life of Pandora. Fans would like to see Cameron return to his roots and do more harder edged sci-fi. Maybe even another Terminator if he had a great idea for it, just anything but spending another half decade making movies nobody else is excited about for.
