From supermarket set smut-fest Sausage Party and BDSM parody Fifty Shades of Black to Robert De Niro degrading himself in Dirty Grandpa, we’ve lapped up all kind of puerile comedy this year. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with a d*ck, fart or poo joke or two. After all, if every gag was a witty repartee that required a PHD to find it funny most of us wouldn’t get the joke. But if childish gags about genitals and bodily functions is all a film has to offer, it can get tiring fast.
The influx of comedies over relying on R-rated humour this year is nothing really new of course and there’s a handful of equally puerile movies released every year. But perhaps there’s something about food orgies, ridiculously large and small prosthetic penises and Zac Efron catching a cackling Robert De Niro masturbating to amateur porn that sets 2016 apart in terms of the crass depths movies are willing to sink to for laughs.
