12 Worst Movie Spin-Offs Ever Made
10. Planes
The three Cars movies are widely referred to as some of the weakest entries in Pixar's entire back catalogue, but after the franchise generated over $10bn in merchandise sales, the decision to make a spin off seemed incredibly cynical and financially motivated, even by Disney's standards.
The movie about cars was called Cars, and the marketing team earned their bonus and must have been high-fiving among themselves when they came up with the idea for Planes. The spinoff didn't even hail from Pixar, with Disneytoon Studios handling the project with input from John Lasseter, and while originally intended to go straight to video the dollar signs in the studio's eyes saw Planes get a theatrical release instead, where it went on to gross almost $240m worldwide.
Unsurprisingly, the cash-grab didn't find much favor with critics, and while the box office numbers proved it was popular with the intended target audience, everybody else instantly saw through the Mouse House's blatant attempt to continue milking their vehicular cash cow for all it was worth.
