You thought Les Misérables was depressing? You aint seen nothing yet! Les Mis mightve scooped the title of saddest film of 2012 but Requiem for a Dream is gunning for the title of most depressing film ever made in the history of cinema. Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film follows four characters as their various drug addictions gradually takeover and destroy their lives: heroin addicts Harry (Jared Leto), his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly) and their friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) and Sara (Ellen Burstyn) Harrys mum and a diet pill addict who spends her days watching TV gameshows. Naturally the film doesnt have a happy ending and by its conclusion Tyrone is in jail, Harry has had his arm amputated due to infection, Marion is a prostitute and Sara is near catatonic after receiving electroshock therapy: not exactly light-hearted viewing. Requiem for a Dream also gets bonus awkward points for an infamous scene involving Marion being pimped out a sex show thatll leave you unable to hear the phrase ass to ass or look at a double-ended dildo in the same way again if that was something you were into.
