The Torture-Porn horror subgenre isn't a very good one, but it does turn out good movies on occasion and this Japanese one from director Takashi Miike is easily the best of all time.

A truly horrifying movie that gets right under your skin, this is elevated by the powerful psychology, harrowing violence and nerve-shredding plot. It uses a very unconventional, yet highly effective, story structure as well. The first half of the film, although still very good and well-written, is actually devoid of horror and plays like a gentle romantic comedy.

Then, around the midway point, the floodgates open and this evolves into a horror film so stomach-churning it caused a record number of walkouts.

It's a very disturbing watch and you're unlikely to see it again, but all horror fans should definitely see it once. It is a truly phenomenal film.
