13 1990s Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
2. Ring
Easily the greatest supernatural film of the 90s, this is also one of the best Japanese horror films of all time - and that's saying a lot considering how many great offerings there are in that category.
A dread-laced, visually mesmerising, endlessly haunting and astonishingly creepy ghost story with a sinister, bone-chilling atmosphere running through every single frame of it, Ring is a devastatingly effective and horrifying examination of modern society's fears about technology.
It is a slow-burn, but thanks to how atmospheric it is it's never dull and the level of dread never dips. Besides, it builds up to one of horror's greatest climaxes, so it sure as hell pays off.
This is really what you wish All supernatural horror films could be. The plot is full of subtext and pathos, the performances are terrific and Ring relies on atmosphere, psychological horror and suspense, rather than jump scares, gore and cliches. As such, Ring soars high above the majority of 90s horror films.
The main characters are slightly under-developed and the dialogue is a little too exposition-heavy, but other than that Ring is a near-perfect horror film that will leave even the bravest viewers watching through their fingers.
