13 1990s Horror Movies You Must See Before You Die
6. The Silence Of The Lambs
The only horror film to ever win Best Picture, The Silence of the Lambs is the movie which all other serial killer films are measured against and it's not hard to see why.
Psychologically complex, genuinely horrific and brutally suspenseful, this is an exemplary horror thriller with a perfect understanding of how to make great characters and how to terrify the audience senseless.
It's also got not one, not two, but Three Oscar-worthy performances from Jodie Foster as one of cinema's best heroines, and Anthony Hopkins and Ted Levine as two of cinema's greatest serial killers. The former two won Oscars for their amazing work, but unfortunately Levine wasn't even nominated for some inexplicable reason.
Since it's so iconic the film has been trivialised (partly thanks to how often it's been parodied) and it isn't perfect, but it mostly holds up very well and remains a must-see classic. Nevertheless, aside from 2002's solid Red Dragon, the rest of the franchise should be avoided.
