13 Announced Movie Remakes Which Could Be Awesome

11. The Witches

Anjelica Huston The Witches
Warner Bros.

The Original: This masterful 1990 adaptation of Roald Dahl's classic fantasy novel melds limber direction from the late Nicolas Roeg with a fantastic Anjelica Huston performance and glorious puppetry by way of Jim Henson's creature shop. If you were born in the 80s, there's a strong chance you love it.

The Remake: After both Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso CuarĂ³n failed to get their own stop-motion remake off the ground, they decided to team up as executive producers on a new live-action take written and directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Cast Away), with Kenya Barris (Girls Trip) collaborating on the script.

Anne Hathaway is set to fill Huston's shoes as the Grand High Witch, while Octavia Spencer will play the kindly grandmother this time.

It's certainly got a high bar to clear to be viewed favourably next to the classic original, but given Zemeckis' aptitude for visual effects and the clear desire to take Dahl's story in a new direction - it's now set in Alabama with a black lead - it will hopefully stand tall on its own.

The Witches releases October 16, 2020.
