13 Announced Movie Remakes Which Could Be Awesome

The Original: Paul W.S. Anderson's cheeseball 1995 video game adaptation, which while grounded by its PG-13 rating, nevertheless delivers oodles of stylish action, fun performances and appropriately ridiculous dialogue. Not a good movie, but a fun movie.

The less said about the 1997 sequel, though, the better.

The Remake: A remake/reboot/re-imagining of Mortal Kombat has been in the works for almost a decade, though hand-wringing over the budget and the desired R-rating eventually caused production to stall.

James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring, Aquaman) signed on as a producer in 2016, and first-time director Simon McQuoid was hired soon thereafter, while scripting duties were handled by another unknown, Greg Russo (who is currently also scripting the Resident Evil reboot).

There's no word yet on when production might begin, but Warner Bros. is apparently pursuing the film as an R-rated blockbuster starring A-list actors with the hope of building a tentpole franchise.

It could certainly work if it skews more adult yet doesn't take itself too seriously or get overly ambitious in its first entry.

Fun though Anderson's movie was, it didn't exactly set the world alight, and even with untested talents in major creative positions, hopefully Wan can nudge them in the right direction.
