13 Announced Movie Remakes Which Could Be Awesome
9. Candyman
The Original: Bernard Rose's 1992 cult classic adaptation of Clive Barker's short story "The Forbidden", an iconic and sublimely moody horror flick with a fantastic performance from Tony Todd as the titular hook-handed killer.
And as was rare for the genre at the time, it was a gore-fest with a real social conscience and sense of time and place.
The Remake: Late last year Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) was confirmed to be producing a remake, with Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) set to direct, while Aquaman's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been cast in an undisclosed role (disputed to be either the protagonist or Candyman himself), and Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk) will play a supporting part.
Peele has since called the film a "spiritual sequel", though it's almost definitely going to be a remake/reboot with a few sly nods to the original film. A Tony Todd cameo sure would be nice.
Between Peele's obvious pedigree, the universal acclaim for DaCosta's debut and the two cast members signed so far, it's easy to be optimistic about this possibly being a rare remake that improves upon the original.
Shooting is due to start imminently for a June 12, 2020 release.
