It's shocking that it took two decades for an Independence Day sequel to actually hit screens, though less surprising was it grossing just $389.7 million worldwide without the presence of Will Smith, a thoroughly mediocre marketing campaign and the film just turning out to be a pretty ho-hum, low-effort sequel.

Though Independence Day: Resurgence concluded with a blatant sequel-bait setup for the third film, and director Roland Emmerich insists it will happen soon, Resurgence barely turning a profit all things considered makes ID3 rather unlikely.

Considering how hard Resurgence pandered to the international market and still couldn't come close to the original film's box office success, Fox will mostly likely deem another sequel not worth the hassle, especially with Disney plotting to acquire them.
