13 Awesome 2016 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

10. Paterson

Captain America Civil War Oscar
Amazon Studios

RottenTomatoes Score: 98% (8.8/10)

Why It Deserves Best Picture: Easily one of Jim Jarmusch's best films to date (if not his best), Paterson is an extremely absorbing, dryly funny character study about a bus driver (Adam Driver) who writes poetry in his spare time for nobody but himself.

With insights into the creative process and the purpose of art, Paterson tackles themes rarely approached in cinema, but wraps entertaining characters and a marvelous central performance around it.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: It's just too "small" and indie for the Oscars, likely to make a few million at the box office and then become a cult classic on the VOD market.

We all know how the Academy loves big "Oscar reel" scenes of volcanic acting and dramatic revelations, but Paterson is exactly the antithesis of that, so no gold statue, sadly.
