13 Awesome Movies To Watch This Summer (Which Aren't Blockbusters)

3. Death Note

Death Note Nat Wolff
Netflix

Release Date: August 25

The Plot: A young man named Light Turner (Nat Wolff) comes into possession of a supernatural notebook, the Death Note, granting him the God-like ability to kill anyone he wants by simply writing their name in the book.

Why It's Going To Be Awesome: Netflix has been killing it lately, and their decision to greenlight a $50 million adaptation of the acclaimed manga series is yet another fascinatingly ballsy decision that a conventional movie studio would never dare make.

With Adam Wingard (The Guest) directing and Willem Dafoe providing the voice for supernatural spirit Ryuk, there's a lot of promise here, and the brief teaser trailer shown off so far looks nothing if not stylistically on-point. Fingers crossed.
