13 Awesome Movies To Watch This Summer (Which Aren't Blockbusters)
2. The Big Sick
Release Date: June 23
The Plot: Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani) attempts to navigate awkward race relations as his Muslim family disapproves of his relationship with Emily (Zoe Kazan). When Emily suddenly falls ill, however, Kumail must step up and help Emily's parents (Ray Romano and Holly Hunter) make sense of it all.
Why It's Going To Be Awesome: The Big Sick has been racking up rave reviews ever since its Sundance premiere, and could very well be the year's Little Indie Film That Could, especially as distribution rights were sold to Amazon Studios for a whopping $12 million.
The script, written by Nanjiani and his real-life wife on which the movie is based, Emily V. Gordon, has received particular praise for subverting typical rom-com cliches and examining the notion of culture clash with probing wit.
If you're craving a love story that won't just be a shoehorned subplot amid all the explosions, this is a sure bet.
