3. Blood Father

The Plot: After his estranged junkie daughter Lydia (Erin Moriarty) gets on the wrong side of some drug dealers, ex-con and recovering alcoholic John Link (Mel Gibson) must return to his violent past in order to protect her.

Why It's Awesome: Mel Gibson has had a tough decade, but Blood Father seems to suggest Hollywood might be prepared to start offering him great roles once again.

Though at its core this is a familiar B-movie, director Jean-François Richet (Mesrine) shoots the hell out of it, and Gibson gives probably his best performance in decades as a father desperate to save his flesh and blood.

With rich, pulpy dialogue for Gibson to tear through and bursts of insane violence that allow him to show off his absolutely stacked physique, this role feels basically tailor-made for the controversial actor.

Gibson may not yet be getting reliable work again that actually lands in cinemas, but this is still easily one of the best genre movies to hit VOD this past summer.
