13 Best Horror Movie Masks
12. Sackman And Friends - The Strangers
A solid entry into the home invasion subgenre, The Strangers features a trio of weirdos out for blood, torturing a lonesome couple in their vacation home whilst decked out in some classically creepy attire. Lead by someone simply referred to as 'the Man in the Mask', his burlap sack acts as an identity obscuring veil - harking back to films like Nightbreed and The Orphanage, and a whole load of other scarecrow-looking baddies that have been suitably evil over the years.
Accompanied by two doll-faced women, these masks aren't anything particularly different from other horror movies before its time. What makes them effective however is their recognition of this, and that we never get an identity shown to us to separate the human from the monster. It's as if putting the masks on transforms these people entirely - despite their nice clothes and well-to-do appearance, they're viscious - and allows them to commit horrible crimes before peeling out never to be seen again.
That they're two ends of the spectrum between crazy sack-wearing farmyard torture looking guy and two pristine dolls is just all the more unnerving.
