While more at home in the comedic elements than the romantic aspects, this tale of the first zombie-human romance is still a cracker. This kind of updated version of Romeo and Juliet sees Zombie 'R' begin to come back to life when he starts falling for Julie, a young woman who is central to the human resistance.

The film never takes itself too seriously and the scenes of zombies first attacking, then defending the humans, is great fun throughout. But there is also a lot more happening beneath the surface, with a genuine heart to the film and a strong message about the importance of love in maintaining our humanity.

The ultra villains of the piece, the Boneys, are devoid of all emotional possibilities and are indicative of those in society who have given up on love. The zombies however are just in a temporary slumber, wondering around aimlessly until love comes a knocking. Nicholas Hoult's R is indicative of the lost soul willing to take a risk on love one more time, and thus becoming more human as a result.

These messages are not shoved down our face but are still very much present, and adds some soul to proceedings when brains aren't being devoured.
