Love Actually

There is so much to love about this film, a warped burst of surreal brilliance that signifies Charlie Kaufman at his absolute peak. But while the surreal elements bring a lot of great comedic moments, it is also utilised to emphasise the importance, and the hurt, that love can bring to our lives.

The film sees former couple Joel and Clementine, brilliantly portrayed by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, using modern technology to have their memories of each other erased. While the process goes off without a hitch for Clementine, Joel starts fighting back during the procedure, literally trying to hold on to what they once had.

The film has a hell of a lot to say about love and the hurt that can result from putting our heart on the line, and makes it abundantly clear that love does not come easy. In spite of this, the film challenges us to take on love anyway, while letting us know that trying to bury the pain of a broken relationship will only see it bubble to the surface anyway.

Most Rom-Com's leave you feeling happy about being in a relationship, but this film manages the remarkable feat of making you feel better about those times that your love fell apart.
