13 Best Romantic Comedies Of The 21st Century
6. 500 Days Of Summer
This non linear film is one of those absolute gems that gives genuine hope for the Rom-Com genre for futures to come. Innovative, funny and with genuine heart, 500 days tells the mixed up story of Tom, played with dorkish charm by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who falls head over heels in love with Zooey Deschanel's Summer. The only problem is, Summer just doesn't feel the same way.
Director Marc Webb is in fine form here, allowing us into Tom's recollections of the girl he loves and the unfortunate fact that Summer doesn't believe that love exists. The portrayal of their near year long relationship and subsequent fallout is inter spliced in a manner that allows us greater insight into why the relationship was never going to work, but was worth a go all the same.
Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel give career best performances, with our sympathies swaying in both directions, if not slightly to Summer. The overly intense nature of Tom is brought to life magnificently, while Summer's realisation that love is a real thing makes us feel warm and fuzzy, even if it isn't with our protagonist.
And yes, the last line is unnecessarily corny, but it's still a nice statement that your next potential romance is just around the corner.
