13 Best Romantic Comedies Of The 21st Century

5. High Fidelity

Love Actually
Touchstone Pictures

There was only really one spot for this film, and that was definitely within our top 5 Romantic Comedies. The focus of the film concentrates on daydreamer Rob Gordon, a character remarkably similar in characteristics to John Cusack, who works at a Record store where he compiles top 5 lists in his head all day.

Gordon has recently been dumped by long term girlfriend Laura, but as we soon find out, there were some damn good reasons for this decision. Heartbroken and searching for answers, Gordon goes on a mission to track down his 'top 5' girlfriends of all time and figure out why their relationships didn't work.

Cusack is brilliant as the mopey Rob, his scenes with coworker Larry, played with insane energy by Jack Black, are comedic delights. A scene where Rob pictures the different ways he could confront Laura's potential new lover is one of the funniest scenes in movie history.

Importantly though there is great chemistry between Cusack and Danish actress Iben Hjejle as Laura, who brings a real sense of a woman trying to move forward from the challenges life has thrown at her. The moment when Laura begs with Rob to be with her to take away the pain of her Father's death is heartbreaking, while Rob's top 5 list of what he loves about Laura is as romantic a film moment as they get.
