13 Bonkers Theories About 2016’s Movies That Surely Can’t Be True
7. It's A Film Within A Film Within A Film - Hail, Caesar!
The Theory: We already know that a swords-and-sandals movie called Hail Caesar is in production within this film's universe (among other films), but what if the one we're watching is in fact just another film within a film, and as the film progresses, the Coen Brothers will provide more meta nods towards this until the big reveal at the end? Why It Could Be True: Because the Coen Brothers love their tricky, clever premises, and what better way to satirise Hollywood than to go one level deeper than audiences are expecting? In much the same way that, say, Burn After Reading sent up tangled government bureaucracy, this would be a hilarious way to further lampoon the inherent insanity of the studio system. Why It Probably Won't Be: This could be an easy way to lose the audience if it gets too meta for its own good. Plus, it seems like having one movie within another is good enough: why risk diluting the plot for the sake of a cheeky inside joke that could wind up more confusing than entertaining? Plus, what sorta framing device would the Coens need to come up with to make this work?
