13 Bonkers Theories About 2016’s Movies That Surely Can’t Be True

6. Selene Dies - Underworld: Next Generation

The Theory: Sexy vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is killed in the movie's climactic set-piece, handing the franchise over to new vampire protagonist David (Theo James). Why It Could Be True: This is the fifth film in the series and Beckinsale's fourth starring turn, so as she begins to potentially age out of the role in a few years' time (though she still looks fantastic, no question), it makes sense to move things on by transitioning protagonists. Plus, Beckinsale may well be fed up of playing the character by now (even though it's an easy pay-day), and the "Next Generation" aspect of the title suggests that her part may be more downplayed in favour of younger actors. What better way to pass the torch than give Selene an epic send-off at the end of the film? Why It Probably Won't Be: As mentioned, these are easy paychecks for Beckinsale, and it's not like she has much else on her slate right now. Plus, the filmmakers may want to test the waters with James first before recklessly disposing of Beckinsale, considering that he's a fairly untested quantity as far as audience connection goes. Also, the fourth movie, 2012's Underworld: Awakening, somehow ended up as the highest-grossing of the lot, so why would Beckinsale want to jump off the gravy train now? On top of all this, series figurehead and Beckinsale's husband Len Wiseman has suggested that she will be returning for the inevitable sixth movie.
