13 Creepy Unsolved Mysteries That Need To Be Turned Into Movies
2. The Hinterkaifeck Slaughter
Germany in the 1920s wasn’t the best time, but add in some creepy, unexplained murders and it gets even worse. The mystery here all started with footprints in the deep snow surrounding a secluded farmhouse - a farmhouse that just so happened to lose its housekeeper months earlier because they were convinced the place was haunted.
After hearing footsteps in the attic, finding things around the house that no one had brought inside, and mysteriously losing the house keys, the family disappeared. After a few days a neighbour went to check on them only to find most of the family slaughtered in the barn by a pickaxe. Those that weren’t in the barn – the maid and the youngest son – were murdered in their beds.
After all of this had taken place the never-to-be-found murderer ended up staying in the house a while, as evidenced by neighbours seeing smoke coming from the chimney and the food in the home having been eaten.
How Would The Movie Look?
Period-set horrors are all the rage these days, and a Hinterkaifeck Murder movie would do well to follow that trend. Directed by a skilled horror director like James Wan, the film could be atmospheric while still delving into the characters on a personal level.
With a crime that’s seemingly senseless and horrific, it would be fascinating for the film to hone in on the mysterious murderer and try to paint a picture of what he did that night and why he did it.
