13 Cringe-Worthy Movie Moments That Completely Ruined Great Songs

9. Singin' In The Rain (Gene Kelly) - A Clockwork Orange

Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange is a work of creative genius as far as its use of music is concerned: cheery classical music is frequently re-purposed throughout the movie, juxtaposed with violence to create a deeply unsettling and also darkly comic vibe. Arguably the most disturbing scene occurs when Alex and his droogs enter Mr. Alexander's house, assaulting him and raping his wife. As the guys ransack the house and begin their assault, Alex breaks out into a spirited rendition of Singin' in the Rain, while kicking and slapping them, and taping the mouths of the pair shut. It's a far cry away from the image of Gene Kelly prancing around in the rain, and completely replaces the song with a tonality that couldn't be any more different if it tried. A classic song is thrown into Kubrick's depraved work with the very deliberate intent of clashing awkwardly, but the end result is nothing short of unforgettable.
