13 Cringe-Worthy Movie Moments That Completely Ruined Great Songs

8. Hip To Be Square (Huey Lewis & The News) - American Psycho

Another troubling example of an extremely upbeat song turned entirely on its head takes place in the superb Christian Bale-starring adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho. One memorable plot point of both the novel and the movie is Patrick Bateman providing a self-important critique of Huey Lewis and the News, referencing the song directly. In the movie, the song plays as Bateman prepares to murder Paul Allen (Jared Leto), who he has lured back to his apartment. Bateman says, "I think their undisputed masterpiece is 'Hip to Be Square', a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself!" He follows up with, "Hey, Paul!", a mere second before denting Allen's skull in with an axe. As he relishes hacking Allen to pieces, he shouts, "Try getting a reservation at Dorsia now you f***ing stupid b*****d!" A hilarious satire of yuppie culture though it might be, it's hard not to think of a blood-soaked Christian Bale whenever this song is heard.
