13 Critically Acclaimed Recent Movies That Actually Sucked

1. The Birth Of A Nation

The Birth Of A Nation Armie Hammer Nate Parker
Fox Searchlight

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 72% (6.7/10)

What The Critics Said: Even though the movie's original Oscar hype was completely obliterated by writer-director-producer-star Nate Parker's rape accusation scandal and the film's generally quite average critical response, it was nevertheless praised as a visceral, well-acted slice of historical drama.

Why It Actually Sucked: Though it boasts a certain effective brutality and the performances are fine, Nate Parker's amateur, heavy-handed direction largely sinks this potentially worthy biopic.

In addition to the incredibly on-the-nose symbolism, there's horrendous editing and wonky cinematography to deal with, basically making the movie feel like badly done Oscar bait on a TV budget. Isn't it interesting that, despite the movie being hugely talked about 9 months ago, it's already entirely faded into the ether?
