13 Frustratingly Underrated Horror Movie Sequels

9. Blair Witch

Final Destination 3
Vertigo Entertainment

Original Film:

The Blair Witch Project, the influential found-footage horror which was a phenomenon back in its day but has fallen out of favor now. An unsuccessful sequel, Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, was released but foundered. Blair Witch ignores Blair Witch 2 and serves as a direct sequel.

Plot:

Heather Donahue's brother goes into the same forest to search for her 20 years after she disappeared.

Blair Witch is better than The Blair Witch Project.

Fine, that might seem like an incredibly controversial statement, but there are definitely arguments to be made in favor of this one.

The characters are far more likable, there's a lot more actual action, it's more visually interesting and it's ultimately quite a bit scarier. The ludicrously harsh ratings (5.0 on IMDb and 35% on RT) aren't very fair. It might be derivative of the original and predictable, but it's a lot scarier than it was given credit for. Maybe people are just biased against found-footage these days?

As well as this, the film makes the very bold decision of actually showing the monsters in the forest, unlike the original, and this works surprisingly well.

As for the original film, if you've attempted to sit through it recently, you'll know that it's aged incredibly badly and really doesn't hold up. This sequel is not only underrated, but it's superior because it is what the original mostly failed to be: entertaining.
