13 Gloriously Hammy Performances In Comic Book Movies

9. Nick Nolte (Hulk)

Ang Lee's Hulk remains divisive over ten years and two more live action Hulks later. It has a meandering storyline, which introduces Bruce Banner€™s father and a genetic predisposition to transformation, and it also tries to deal with some bigger themes (daddy issues, anyone?) rather than providing an hour and a half of excuses for Hulk to smash. The focus on the dramatic gives Nick Nolte an opportunity to ham it up as the unstable David Banner, and his appearances are a much-needed diversion from the constant angst. Nolte also offers perhaps the only example in cinematic history of an actor literally and metaphorically chewing the scenery at the same time, as he gnaws on a cable in one of the film€™s climactic scenes. He€™s electrocuted in the process and emits a noise somewhere between a howl and a wail before transforming into a messy CGI version of the Absorbing Man. After Nolte spends the best part of the film alternately shrieking and rasping at Eric Bana€™s Bruce, this hardly seems strange at all.
