From this point on, Disney is basically battling Disney to see which of their franchises is the most profitable. When you throw nostalgia into the mix, the sky's the financial limit, and so it was to the surprise of roughly nobody that last year's live-action Beauty and the Beast adaptation soared to stratospheric box office success.

Everyone knows the story, and it appealed hard to both kids and adults alike, certainly far more than Black Panther, at least on paper. Black Panther was no doubt boosted by fans going back to revisit it a few times - something that always helps out "nerdy" blockbusters compared to more typical tentpoles - but even so, triumphing over one of Disney's most beloved fairytales is certifiably insane.
