The Original Plan

In the early drafts of Guardians Of The Galaxy, Karen Gillan's Daddy-Issues-suffering Nebula was supposed to go the way of pretty much every Marvel villain the MCU, dying in her climactic battle scene.

Gillan confirmed as much to Digital Spy in the run-up to the sequel's release...

I definitely had a feeling that there was room for the character to expand in the future, but she was originally supposed to die in the first movie, I think I remember in the script.

What Happened Instead?

Apparently, director James Gunn grew fond of the character to such an extent that she was saved from the chop, and we now get to see her play out her friction with her sister in the sequel, and probably with her old man in Avengers: Infinity War.

"She obviously did not die, then I found out that she was coming back in the second movie and then I found out we got to explore all these amazing things about her past and her relationship with Gamora, her sister, so I was really happy."
