10. Spawn

If it was released in 2018, Mark A.Z. Dippé's Spawn might well have been far better received than it was back in 1997. Just as Warner Bros were seeking a more family-friendly comic book movie with the awful Batman & Robin, New Line were going the opposite way with a grown-up, horror-tinged take on the iconic cult comic.

Sadly, thanks to a bad script, ropey story and fatal lack of good direction, the film is widely panned as one of the worst comic book movies ever. It has its fans, but they're in a minority and hopefully they'll get an even better movie when the reboot finally comes out.

But despite all of the film's issues, Michael Jai White's Spawn looked incredible - like a sort of heavy metal mash-up of The Punisher, Venom and Doctor Strange. He could perhaps have done with a few more chains, but even without the mask, you have to admire the design work that went into him.
