13 Long-Delayed Film Projects We Wish Would Get Made Already

9. Cobalt Neural 9

#2:3 - The WachowskisOriginally Announced: May 2010 Status: Most likely dead. Plot Details: Set in the near future, Cobalt Neural 9 centers on the love affair between a US soldier and an Iraqi soldier. Why Is It Most Likely Dead? Nobody seems to want to fund a hard-R war drama that focuses on a homosexual relationship between two soldiers. Before the Wachowskis started work on their highly-ambitious 2012 film Cloud Atlas, they were working very hard to get Cobalt Neural 9 made. As you can imagine, the project is very controversial in nature, but it's something the siblings have been very passionate about and still hope to make. Back in 2010, there were constant stories about the project even though the Wachowskis tried very hard to keep it all a secret. Plot details began to emerge later in the year which confirmed the rumors that the movie would be entering very hard-R rated territory. In the script, there's graphic descriptions of the soldiers having sex, among other things. Perhaps even more controversial is that the two soldiers eventually embark on a plot to assassinate "war architect" George W. Bush. That's some pretty intense stuff right there. While the project actually made it to the casting stage, it was put on the backburner once Cloud Atlas received funding. After that, they started work on Jupiter Ascending, which comes out this summer. Whether or not they'll ever return to Cobalt Neural 9 remains to be seen.
