Now, I know what you're thinking. How could Pamela Voorhees, a mom driven to killing for her son, that loves her boy and would do anything for him, who lives on as a decapitated mantle decoration in his shack as a symbol of the pairs eminently creepy mother-son bond, not recognise her own boy? In what world would she disown the child she worked so hard to avenge? How could she?!

Well, that's easy. Betsy Palmer, the actor who played Pamela, had a bit of an in joke with fans that approached her regarding Friday the 13th. Since Jason has his lore retconned in Part 2, Palmer tells them she has no idea who the guy in the hockey mask is - committing to the bit that her son drowned in 1957. It's what Pamela would have known, after all, and is a cute easter egg for anyone that was lucky enough to converse with her about the movie before her death in 2015.
