13 Movie Scenes Everyone Misunderstood As Kids
1. Pretty Much Everything In Forrest Gump
What Kids See: Aren't kids innocent? Forrest Gump is such a wonderfully charming movie that any children viewing are prepared to just go along with several scenes they clearly won't have much understanding of at all:
a) Why does Forrest make grunting noises when the Principal leaves his house? Is that just him being "different"?
b) Why was Jenny's dad arrested?
c) What happened to Forrest when Jenny took her bra off? Was he grossed out by her body?
d) How does Jenny die?
The Reality: Despite its tone suggesting a family-friendly drama, Forrest Gump does a pretty good job straddling the PG-13 line, only hinting at some of its more suggestive and adult themes.
For starters, a) Forrest's mother (Sally Field) bangs the Principal to keep him in regular school, leading to him telling Forrest, "Your momma sure does care about your schoolin', son", to which Forrest responds by imitating his rampant sex noises; b) Jenny's dad was molesting her and her sisters (Forrest says, "a very loving man...always kissing and touching Jenny and her sisters"); c) Forrest prematurely ejaculates the second he touches Jenny's boob; and d) it's heavily implied Jenny has AIDS, given the time period and her quote, "I have some kind of virus. And the doctors don't, they don't know what it is. And there isn't anything they can do about it."
Props to screenwriter Eric Roth for having such a fine handle on the tonality of the piece that he could make it function on two levels simultaneously so well, and so often in plain sight of its younger audience members.
