13 Movie Scenes Everyone Misunderstood As Kids

12. It's Not Funny, It's Attempted Murder - Home Alone 2

What Kids See: Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is just defending himself from those pesky thieves Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), right? Nothing wrong with the bad people getting what they deserve.

The Reality: Home Alone 2 eschews the more aloof hijinx of the first movie and delivers something, well, a whole lot more brutal. Marv in particular takes an absolute pasting over the course of the movie, having bricks thrown at his forehead from a six-story building, falling on his face numerous times, being electrocuted and suffering various other injuries also.

Harry doesn't exactly have a picnic himself, having his head set on fire (again) and prat-falling repeatedly throughout the movie. The pair's final indignity comes in the form of them being mauled by pigeons, which going by the look on Marv's face, is pretty far from pleasant.

The point is that, as a kid, Home Alone 2 is harmless fun on par with a Wile E Coyote cartoon, but as an adult, understanding the consequences of violence and the brutal nature of the scenes (the sound editing and Marv's screams are particularly horrific), Home Alone 2 just isn't as fun as the first film. It's far from a kid trying to protect his castle: it's attempted murder, because in real life, Harry and Marv would have died numerous times over the course of the movie.

When the film makes you feel sorry for the bad guys, it's clearly done something wrong.
