13 Movie Scenes Everyone Misunderstood As Kids

11. The Hat Boner - The Cat In The Hat

What Kids See: The Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers) sees a family picture of Conrad and Sally's mother (Kelly Preston), to which he asks, "Who is this!?", while unraveling the picture out of the frame like a Playboy centerfold. His hat comically elongates with a "boing!" noise just as Conrad tells him, "That's my mom", and he retorts, "Awkward, yeah", complete with a record scratch.

So, the Cat in the Hat thinks their mother is pretty? And she is, so what's the big deal?

The Reality: There's some not-so-subtle innuendo in this scene, and it's all about the Cat's hat. When he looks at the picture, his hat goes stiff and long, a not-so-subtle visual metaphor for the Cat's raging boner, with the full-length fold-out picture and the Cat's eye-line making it quite clear to older viewers what he's been eyeing up.

Thankfully the movie was reviewed badly enough that, after the initial theatrical surge to see it, few parents have actually suffered the movie upon their children.
