The 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme-starring martial arts cult classic Kickboxer quickly birthed four (!) Van Damme-less sequels between 1991 and 1995 before the critically-panned franchise went into hibernation.

It received a surprise resurrection in 2016 with the honestly-not-bad reboot Kickboxer: Vengeance, which brought Van Damme back into the fold as a Muay Thai trainer, while Dave Bautista co-starred as the movie's burly antagonist.

The sequel, Kickboxer: Retaliation, was shot before Vengeance was even released, once again co-starring Van Damme while also boasting appearances from the likes of Mike Tyson, Christopher Lambert, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson (aka The Mountain from Game of Thrones) and...Ronaldinho.

The most surprising fact of all is that the seventh Kickboxer movie is actually a damn fun time, currently holding a shocking 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The plot is pure nonsense and there are no acting Oscars in the future of anyone involved with the film, but thanks to sharp fight choreography and unexpectedly strong visuals, it's effortlessly the best film in the series.

There's a lot to be said for a movie that knows its audience and gets this much out of its clear budgetary constraints. Better still, an eighth film, tentatively named Kickboxer: Armageddon, is planning to shoot later this year.
