4. Carol
Nominations: Going by the explosive Cannes reception, the following categories are absolute slam-dunks: Best Picture, Director, Actress (Cate Blanchett), Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara), Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Costume Design and Original Score. 8 nominations. What It Could Win: It certainly has the potential to go all the way and win the big one among several others (Director, Screenplay and so on), so frankly, it's something of a crap shoot: it depends more on how the movie is marketed ahead of the voting period. What It Will Win: Blanchett's win is the one sure bet here (assuming she and Mara aren't swapped categories), whereas everything else could easily fall by the wayside given the film's more "niche" appeal compared to its competitors. 1 win.
