Nominations: As the film is sight unseen and the trailers don't give too much away, this one is still a bit of a mystery, but there's one aspect above all others that seems like a sure thing: the astonishing makeup used to transform Johnny Depp into insanely iconic Irish-American mobster Whitey Bulger. Cross your fingers that Depp might finally claw his way out of his mediocre rut and score his first Oscar nod since 2008's nomination for Sweeney Todd. Optimistically, Black Mass gets 2 nominations for Best Makeup & Hairstyling and Best Actor. What It Could Win: Perhaps Depp will finally rebound from his rather unsavory cinematic tenure recently, and awards voters, like everyone else, absolutely love a comeback. Time will tell. What It Will Win: The Academy loves severe transformations, and there's unlikely to be any this year as memorable as Depp's fascinating turn into a South Boston gangster. The fact that Depp's an extremely handsome actor being made into a scuzzy old man will only fuel the Academy's obsession with the evidently fantastic makeup job on this movie. 1 win.
