13 Movies That Made Being A Bad Guy Look Incredibly Cool
4. Natural Born Killers (1994)
Natural Born Killers is a weird one to include on the list. Perhaps Oliver Stone's last good film, it does not seek to glorify a life of crime and violence, as others on the list undoubtedly do. However to an uninformed audience, it looks that way. The film is shot like an MTV music video; quick-cuts, canted angles and coloured filters all adding to the snappy pace. In that sense, Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis are rockstars, albeit uncontrollable, demented rockstars of course. Yet, a considered look at Natural Born Killers would highlight a social commentary; or a how-to guide on getting famous. Stone suggests that as a society we reward characters like Mickey and Mallory Knox with the fame they crave. The aftermath of such irresponsible presentation of criminals by the media is shown in the devolution into madness by TV personality Wayne Gale (Robert Downey Jr) during the prison sequence. The exaggerated mise-en-scene and tone of the film, although entirely unrealistic, presents violence and crime as a drug-fuelled fantasy (similar to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) that is purely comedic - and brilliant entertainment to the mass audience.
